Your Skin Is Not Amazon Prime. Results Take Longer Than Two Days.

I would love to tell you that you can book one appointment, lie on my table for an hour and leave with every skin concern you have ever had completely gone. That would make my job really easy. It would also be a lie. Corrective skincare takes time. Acne takes time. Pigmentation takes time. Collagen remodeling definitely takes time. Even when we choose exactly the right treatment, your skin still has to do the actual work afterward. And unfortunately, your skin does not care that you have somewhere to be Saturday.

One treatment can be great without being the final result

You can absolutely notice a difference after one treatment. A dermaplane facial can leave your skin noticeably smoother right away. A chemical peel can brighten dull skin and start working on pigmentation and texture. Microneedling begins a healing and remodeling process that continues well after you leave my treatment room. But noticing improvement and being finished are two completely different things. If you have acne scars that have been developing for ten years, I am not going to tell you one microneedling treatment will erase them. If you have years of sun damage, one chemical peel may make your skin look better, but it probably is not the end of the story. Sometimes we need a series. Sometimes we need different treatments at different stages. Sometimes your skin responds faster than expected and sometimes it takes longer. I would rather tell you that on day one than have you wondering three weeks later why you do not look like somebody's before and after photo.

This is also why I spend so much time educating my patients

I do not just want to tell you what treatment I recommend. I want you to understand why I am recommending it. If I think microneedling makes more sense than another chemical peel, I want you to know what I am seeing in your skin that made me make that decision. If I tell you we need to work on your barrier before we do something more aggressive, I want you to understand why an irritated barrier can change how your skin responds. If I am asking you to stop using something for a while, I want you to know why. I think people are much more likely to follow a treatment plan when it actually makes sense to them. There is a big difference between me saying, “Do this because I said so,” and me explaining what we are trying to accomplish and how each piece gets us there. I want you involved in your own skincare. You only spend a small amount of time with me in the treatment room. You live with your skin every single day. So yes, the education matters. A lot.

Think about going to the dentist

This is probably the easiest comparison. Imagine going to the dentist every six months for a cleaning, but never brushing your teeth at home. No toothpaste. No floss. Nothing. Then six months later you sit in the chair and say, “I don't understand why my teeth aren't doing better. I come here twice a year.” Your dentist can do a fantastic cleaning. They can remove buildup, look for problems and help keep your mouth healthy. But they cannot brush your teeth for you the other 363 days of the year. Skincare is not that different. I can give you a great chemical peel. I can microneedle your skin beautifully. I can customize a facial around exactly what I am seeing that day. And then you go home. What happens there matters.

Homecare is a huge part of the equation

I do not mean you need a twelve-step routine or a bathroom counter full of expensive products. Actually, please don't. I mean we need a routine that supports what we are trying to accomplish. If we are treating pigmentation but you are not wearing sunscreen, we are working against ourselves. If we are trying to repair your barrier but you go home and exfoliate every night because your skin feels rough, we have a problem. If we are working on acne but your routine contains six irritating active ingredients that your skin cannot tolerate, another treatment may not be the missing piece. Sometimes homecare is what keeps the result going. Sometimes it prepares your skin so I can safely do more. Sometimes fixing the home routine makes such a difference that we do not need to be nearly as aggressive in the treatment room. That is why I ask what you use. Not because I am trying to replace everything you own. I need to know what your skin is dealing with when you are not with me.

And no, expensive does not automatically mean better

This is another place where education matters. I am not impressed by a product because the bottle is pretty or because it costs $180. I care about what is in it, whether it makes sense for your skin and whether you are actually going to use it. The best skincare routine is not the one with the most products. It is the one that supports your goals without making your skin miserable. Sometimes I am going to recommend adding something. Sometimes I am going to tell you to stop using three things. Both can be corrective skincare.

Your skin has its own timeline

This is probably the most frustrating part. There are biological processes happening underneath the result you eventually see in the mirror. Collagen remodeling takes time. Pigment can take time to move and improve. Acne does not disappear just because we finally found a plan that makes sense. Sometimes you are improving before the difference feels dramatic to you. This is why I like progress photos. You see your face every day. Tiny changes are hard to notice when you are staring at the same skin every morning. Put your starting photo next to a photo from three months later and suddenly it can be a very different conversation. That is also why I do not love judging corrective treatments too early. If I told you the result develops over several weeks, checking the mirror fourteen times the next morning is probably not going to speed it up. I have tried. It does not work.

Realistic expectations do not mean low expectations

This is important because I do not want “be realistic” to sound like I expect mediocre results. I want really good results. I just want results that make sense for your skin, your concern and the treatment we are doing. There is nothing wrong with wanting significant improvement. I just do not want to promise perfection when skin does not work that way. Pores still exist. Lines may soften without disappearing. Acne scars can improve dramatically and still be visible. Pigmentation may take multiple treatments. Acne can get better and still occasionally break out because you are, in fact, still a human being with skin. We can improve a lot without pretending normal skin is a failure.

This is why a treatment plan matters more than collecting appointments

I do not want you bouncing from microneedling to a chemical peel to some random treatment you saw online because you did not get the full result you wanted in two weeks. I would much rather know where we are trying to go. Maybe we start with barrier health. Maybe we work on active acne first. Maybe microneedling becomes part of the plan for textural scarring. Maybe we add chemical peels later for pigmentation. Maybe your home routine needs to change somewhere in there. There should be a reason for all of it. Otherwise we are just doing things to your face and hoping something eventually works. That is not how I want to practice.

I want you to understand your skin, not depend on me forever

This might be one of my favorite parts of what I do. I want you to eventually recognize when your barrier is getting irritated. I want you to know why you are using a product instead of applying it because somebody told you to. I want you to understand why we chose a treatment and what we are waiting for afterward. The more you understand your own skin, the better decisions you can make between appointments too. That education is part of the service to me. You are not just coming to Skin Therapy with Marissa in Bentonville so I can put things on your face for an hour. I want you to leave knowing more than you did when you walked in.

So how fast should you expect results?

That depends on what we are treating. I know. There is that answer again. Some treatments give you an immediate cosmetic improvement. Other treatments are asking your skin to remodel itself over time. Corrective concerns often require several appointments and good homecare working together. That is something I will talk through with you before we start. If you are looking for corrective skincare, customized facials, chemical peels or microneedling in Bentonville, I want you to come in excited about what we can improve. I just also want you to understand how we are going to get there. Because one hour with me can do a lot. What we do together over the next several months can do a whole lot more.
