Why I Don’t Want to Just Sit There and Talk About Your Skin When I First Meet You

I can learn a lot from talking to you about your skin. I want to know what bothers you, what you have tried, what you are using at home and what you wish looked different. But when I first meet you, I do not really want to spend the entire appointment sitting across from you talking about your face. I want to get my hands on it. That is exactly why I offer a Discovery Facial for new patients. A traditional skin consultation has value, but there are things I simply cannot learn from talking to you for thirty minutes. Once I cleanse your skin, get the makeup and sunscreen off and actually start working with it, I get a completely different picture of what is going on. And honestly, sometimes your skin tells me a very different story than you do.
You might think you have dry skin. I might see something else.
People describe their skin based on what they experience at home, which makes sense. You might tell me you have extremely dry skin because your face feels tight every time you wash it. Then I start working with your skin and realize you are actually dehydrated, irritated and using an exfoliating cleanser twice a day with retinol every night. That changes things. Someone else may tell me they are extremely oily. Once I cleanse the skin and look closely, I may see oil sitting on top of a barrier that is struggling underneath. This is why I do not want to build your entire treatment plan around a box that says dry, oily or combination. Skin is a little more complicated than that.
A Discovery Facial lets me see how your skin actually behaves
This is probably the biggest reason I prefer it over a consultation alone. During the Discovery Facial, I can see how easily your skin flushes. I can feel areas of roughness and dehydration. I can get a much better look at congestion, pigmentation, acne, texture and the condition of your barrier. I also get to see how your skin responds while I am treating it. That matters to me. Sometimes somebody's skin looks perfectly calm when they walk in, then becomes reactive very quickly once we start cleansing and working with it. Other times someone is convinced they have sensitive skin and their skin actually tolerates treatment beautifully. I would much rather learn that during a customized facial than guess from across a consultation table.
And yes, I am absolutely going to ask about your medications
This is the part where I become a little nosy. I want to know your medications, prescription skincare, recent treatments, allergies, sensitivities and anything else that could change how your skin heals or reacts. If you had microneedling recently, tell me. If you had a chemical peel two weeks ago, tell me. If you are using prescription retinoids, tell me. If you recently had laser, injections, surgery or another treatment, I want to know that too. Please do not decide something is irrelevant because it does not seem like a skincare medication. Sometimes medications that have absolutely nothing to do with acne or wrinkles can still matter when we are deciding what is safe to put on your skin. A good skin treatment consultation should involve a lot more than asking what moisturizer you use.
Your skin barrier can change my entire plan
You may walk in completely convinced that you need a chemical peel. Maybe you do. But if I cleanse your face and realize your barrier is irritated, everything is reactive and your skin is basically begging us to leave it alone for a minute, I am not going to slap a strong peel on it because that is what you originally wanted.
We might need to work on barrier health first. That does not mean I am keeping you from the treatment you want. I am trying to get your skin healthy enough to actually benefit from it. I would rather tell you no today and give you a better treatment later than do something just because you were willing to pay for it. That is a pretty important part of how I practice.
Active acne is another reason I want more than a conversation
Acne can look completely different from one person to another. I want to see whether we are dealing with congestion, inflamed lesions, pigmentation left behind from old breakouts, textural scarring or some combination of all of it. And yes, active acne can still be treated in different ways depending on what I see. I do not automatically rule out treatments just because somebody has a breakout. But I need to know what kind of acne I am looking at and what condition the surrounding skin is in. There is a big difference between active acne on otherwise healthy skin and active acne on a face that has been exfoliated into complete misery. I know that one personally. When I was struggling with acne, I threw everything I could at it. More exfoliation, more active ingredients, stronger products. I kept thinking I just had not found the right thing yet. Meanwhile my barrier was getting angrier and my acne was getting worse. So now when I see somebody doing the same thing, I recognize it pretty quickly.
I also want to know what YOU actually care about
This might sound obvious, but it is really important. I can look under a magnifying lamp and find plenty of things we could work on. That does not mean you care about all of them. Maybe I notice pigmentation immediately but you barely notice it. What bothers you is the texture on your cheeks every time you put on foundation. Then that is what I want to talk about. I am not interested in sitting there pointing out ten new things for you to become insecure about. You came to me with a reason. I want to hear it. A Discovery Facial gives us enough time to talk about those concerns while I am also getting a much better understanding of the skin we are actually working with.
Sometimes I am going to adjust your expectations too
This is another thing I would rather talk about early. If you have deep acne scars that have been there for fifteen years, one facial is not going to erase them. If you have significant pigmentation, we may need more than one treatment. If your goal is something the treatment you have been researching simply cannot realistically accomplish, I am going to tell you. I would much rather have that conversation before you spend money. Sometimes we need a series of treatments. Sometimes we need more than one approach. Sometimes the thing you thought you needed is not actually what I would choose after seeing your skin. That is not me trying to complicate things. Skin just has a habit of doing that on its own.
So why is the Discovery Facial better than a consultation alone?
Because I get both. We still talk. I still ask questions. We still discuss your products, goals, medications, previous treatments and anything else that matters. But then I actually get to work with your skin. You also leave having received a customized facial instead of spending the entire appointment discussing what we might do someday. For a new patient, I think that is a much more useful first appointment. I learn more about you. I learn more about your skin. You get to see how I work and how your skin responds. Then we can make a much smarter plan together.
Maybe that plan includes chemical peels. Maybe it is microneedling. Maybe it is a series of customized facials. Maybe I want you to change two things at home and come back before we do anything aggressive. And sometimes I am going to tell you that your skin really does not need as much as you thought. I am okay with that too.
You do not have to know what to book before you meet me
If you are searching for a skin consultation in Bentonville because you genuinely have no idea what your skin needs, that is exactly who I had in mind when I created the Discovery Facial. If you are looking for an aesthetician in Bentonville or a customized facial in Bentonville, you do not need to diagnose yourself first. Bring me your questions. Take pictures of your skincare products. Tell me what you love, what you hate and what you have already spent way too much money trying to fix. Then let me actually meet your skin. That is much more useful to me than sitting across from you talking about it for thirty minutes. And frankly, a lot more interesting too.
