Peach Fuzz, Dead Skin & Dullness: Why Your Face Might Be Begging for a Dermaplane Facial
Have you ever applied your foundation, only to notice it clinging to tiny hairs or dry patches? Or looked in the mirror and wondered why your skin looks dull, even though you've been keeping up with your skincare routine?
Sometimes, your skin doesn't need another expensive serum. It just needs a good exfoliation. That's where a dermaplane facial comes in. And there's a reason it's one of my favorite treatments for achieving that fresh, smooth, healthy-looking glow.
So, What Exactly Is Dermaplaning? Dermaplaning is a professional exfoliation treatment that uses a sterile, surgical-style blade to gently remove dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (better known as peach fuzz) from the surface of your face.
Now, I know the thought of someone taking a blade to your face might sound a little intimidating, but when performed properly by a trained professional, it's a surprisingly gentle treatment. And the best part? You can see and feel the difference almost immediately.
What Are the Benefits of a Dermaplane Facial? 1. Your skin feels ridiculously smooth. One of the first things clients notice after dermaplaning is how soft their skin feels. By removing surface buildup and peach fuzz, we're revealing the smoother skin underneath. It's that run-your-fingers-across-your-cheeks kind of smooth.
2. Your makeup applies so much better. This is a big one, especially if you wear foundation. Peach fuzz and dry, flaky skin can make makeup look uneven or textured. Once those are removed, foundation tends to glide on more smoothly and look more natural. Honestly, this benefit alone makes dermaplaning worth considering before a special event.
3. That dull complexion gets a little brighter. As dead skin cells accumulate on the surface, they can make your complexion appear tired, rough, or uneven. Dermaplaning removes some of that buildup, allowing your skin to reflect light more evenly. The result? A fresher, brighter appearance without needing days of recovery.
4. Your skincare routine gets a fresh start. Think about how your moisturizer feels when your skin is dry and flaky. Removing that excess surface buildup creates a smoother canvas for your skincare products. While dermaplaning isn't a guarantee that every product will penetrate more deeply, it can help moisturizers apply more evenly. And when we follow exfoliation with hydrating, skin-supporting products during a facial? That's when the glow really starts coming together.
5. It's a great option when you don't want significant downtime. Unlike more intensive resurfacing treatments, dermaplaning generally requires little to no downtime. You might experience mild temporary redness or sensitivity, but most people can return to their regular activities the same day. Your skin will need gentle care and good sun protection afterward.
Let's Clear Up the Biggest Dermaplaning Myth "Won't my facial hair grow back thicker and darker?" Nope! And I wish more people knew this. Dermaplaning doesn't change the structure of your hair follicle. Removing peach fuzz at the surface won't cause it to grow back thicker, darker, or faster. As it grows back, the blunt tip may temporarily feel a little different, but the actual hair hasn't changed. So if that's what's been keeping you from trying dermaplaning, you can put that worry aside.
Is Dermaplaning Right for Everyone? As much as I love this treatment, I don't recommend it for absolutely everyone. If you're experiencing active, inflamed acne, significant irritation, a compromised skin barrier, or certain inflammatory skin conditions, we may need to choose a different treatment or wait until your skin has calmed down. And while dermaplaning can make superficial texture look smoother, it isn't a treatment for deep acne scars, wrinkles, or stubborn pigmentation. That's why I always believe in looking at your actual skin concerns rather than recommending the same facial to everyone.
How Often Should You Get a Dermaplane Facial? For most clients, every 4 to 6 weeks is a reasonable starting point, depending on their skin type, sensitivity, and other treatments they're receiving. You don't need to aggressively exfoliate your skin to keep it looking beautiful. In fact, overdoing it can create more problems than it solves. Consistency and a healthy skin barrier will always matter more than chasing instant results.
